So today I took a cold shower, and since I had made an appointment yesterday with a friend of mine who studies Security to help him with his homework, I didn’t wake up too late. The appointment was delayed, which gave me time to do groceries, so I got groceries, ate two doughnuts in the car and had meat and juice at home.
It’s important to motivate people to do the right things. This guy needs some help with his studies, and since I know a bit or two about making homework, I decided I could lend a hand. We’re all in the same game, so might as well help the people you like succeed, right? And I like this guy, he’s got guile.
He’s got a good heart, is eager to learn about girls, which obviously I got sympathy for, but doesn’t know how to concentrate on his studies yet. Since I’ve been in the ‘zone’ a lot of times (often just before a deadline, but occasionally I’ll get in the zone when I’m writing or painting) I can probably teach him a thing or two about it.
Even though I am just typing a blog right now and not making any homework for myself (I’ve got Reflection week – a week for the professors to grade tests and papers and a week off for students to reflect on their block or to prepare for the coming block) I can still help him. I already know the basics of teaching someone something since I’ve followed some courses Educational Science, and got a bit of interning experience in the field.
We’ve got coffee and tea, we’re going to get coffee at the mall after he’s done, it’s all good in the hood. Chilling out maxing, relaxing all cool.
In the 15 minutes he has been working he’s started over twice and already had some technical difficulties. Writing rapports doesn’t come easy to him obviously, but we’ll get through it. He’s already said he’s learned something, so that’s good. He’s looking at examples of colleague students, examples that are ridden with mistakes.
It reminds me of the time I was in highschool and tried to cheat on a test by glancing over at the paper of the person sitting next to me, only to copy her answer faultily. It taught me that if you want to score, you need to do the work yourself. A lesson more valuable than the actual answer on that particular test.
I think I need to get this guy under my wing, study-wise. There’s a lot he can learn. He’s dissatisfied with going to trade school, stating that he dislikes how all the people in his class curse with diseases; and while I think he needs this school in order to climb up the educational ladder and that there might be more in store for him if he tries his best, I see that he needs external motivation.
How do you motivate someone? From my experience, by leading by example. I am writing furiously on this blog, peeking over to check on what he’s doing, correcting him as he goes, vowing to not stop typing until he’s finished. It’s also an excercise for me, motivating myself internally and letting that light shine upon others. Repent, sinner, so that you will be saved by the educational system and rise to intellectual heights that you have never dreamed of before.
I’ve got examples myself. We all have some figures we look up to. For me it’s a couple of guys, who studied hard and are now in a good place in their lives. Some of them self-taught, some of them through the Universities. I’ve also got some people I want to help studying. A girl who has finished art school and is doubting whether she has the skills and wants to make the investment to make it through Art History at University (about which I have no doubt if she uses her resources well) and this guy who is studying Security.
If I want to get into education, which I do, I might as well start practicing my didactic skills as soon as possible. I’m not really enrolled in any extracurricular activities because they don’t interest me enough. I’m content with reading my books, doing my work. Teaching friends how to study might become my extracurricular activity. It might improve my own study skills. How valuable is it if you put on your curriculum vitae that you helped 2 friends get through school? Probably less valuable than networking at your study organization, but I’d like to try.
I’m, as always, pretty content with how my life is going right now. Got that stable life, doing pretty much what I want. I have the time to develop myself, which I do. More money would be nice but I’m getting by, slowly learning to budget, eat at home and do with what I have. I paraphrase Seneca: “When you live luxuriously, no capital is big enough. But if you live frugally, there are possibilities within any budget”.
I’ve glanced over at my friends laptop and saw some horrible spelling and grammar mistakes. It’s not to worry about, it’s his level and we’ll smoothen it out together. I’ve learned about the Zone of Proximal Development, a theory which states that you let someone perform the best they can by providing a helping hand which has more information in its grasp, and therefore challenge the capacity of the learner. I let him correct his own mistakes and itâ€™s working.
He’s visibly struggling with the text he’s creating, audibly wondering how far he can go in handling the assignment creatively. From what I’ve read of his student colleagues they’re not playing with the assignment very much, I’m urging the friend to make up some stuff to make the rapport realistic and relevant to his other school subjects.
Paperâ€™s done, it looks very professional. We even added a fake company logo on top of the page. I hope he scores a good grade so he can take his exam. Heâ€™s going to get feedback from his teacher tomorrow. Iâ€™d like to be there. Proud of him.
We got coffee and met up with a mutual friend of ours. Did a bit of talking about wine, not really my subject since I donâ€™t drink, but it was nice to hear someone be enthusiastic about something.
