Back to School: Jane Eyre’s Lowood Institution, Adapted
If one views adaptations as situated utterances, one may be able to link the specific contexts with a particular adaptation. Brontë’s Jane Eyre has been adapted multiple times – of which two examples are films made in 1943 and 2011. While in the novel Eyre’s time at Lowood describes a wide variation of themes, in the films this is not the case. A matter of interest is what has been done with the themes in the adaptations and how these fit the contemporary social contexts. This paper will argue … [Read more...] about Back to School: Jane Eyre’s Lowood Institution, Adapted
[Read more...] about Samenvatting: Creaties van de Hemel – Universiteit Utrecht 2020-2021
Studying and Emotional Implications
It's been a weird week. I haven't studied that much, instead focusing on painting. I have read some books for a course, and they all touched a nerve. When I had to read Peter Pan I wondered about how much of me is still childlike in dreaming and adventurousness. I guess not that much: Apart from the odd painting I rarely go on adventures. Maybe it's the age I have, maybe it's mental obstacles like thinking about a lack of money. I tend to think about doing things more than I do them. New … [Read more...] about Studying and Emotional Implications
Book Report: Brontë – Jane Eyre
Two nights ago, in bed, I had this slightly schizofrenic thought that my life would improve if I recited my lessons learned at educational institutions in my head. If you're living with your mom again at 27, you'll try anything. Just kidding; love you, mom. Anyway, I had just finished Brontë's Jane Eyre and also thought to myself that I haven't made a proper book report in a long time. So here we go: A very basic book report. Jane Eyre Jane Eyre is a Victorian Bildungsroman in the … [Read more...] about Book Report: Brontë – Jane Eyre
Christmas Holidays + Painting Video setup
Christmas is almost here. My family is going to take turns visiting my grandpa (whose newfound hobby is beating his family members at online Scrabble). Tomorrow I'm getting my tattoo lasered again. It's getting lighter already. I've had three laser appointments, about 5-6 to go: I've got a new portrait painting order and will film the process with my new rig. I finally found out how to connect my DSLR to my PC and film what I draw. Studying is going pretty well, have some catching … [Read more...] about Christmas Holidays + Painting Video setup

“Where Is Our Relationship Going?” Movement in Katherina and Petruccio’s Relationship
The debate on gender relations in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew was according to Smith (289) divided in two opposing camps. Firstly there were the revisionists, who “…read the play as Kate’s taming, [who] see her role as reflective or constructive of early modern patriarchal hierarchies […]”. Secondly Smith characterizes the antirevisionists: “[…] those who read Kate’s final speech ironically, as an act or game” (289). In this last view Katherina has not been tamed, and thus the … [Read more...] about “Where Is Our Relationship Going?” Movement in Katherina and Petruccio’s Relationship

The Female: from Supporter to Important Part of a Symbiotic Whole in The Star Rover
Jack London's (1876-1916) The Star Rover (1915) is a story told from the first-person perspective about transcendence. The story features as its protagonist Darrell Standing, a former scientist who is about to be hanged in the prison of San Quentin, California (London, 2003). Throughout the book Standing selectively recollects his prison memories, especially the time he has spent in solitary confinement, focusing on his time in the straight jacket. This time spent in the straight jacket, or the … [Read more...] about The Female: from Supporter to Important Part of a Symbiotic Whole in The Star Rover
Salmon-Spinach Pasta Recipe
I've helped up clean up a friends room today. And one of the things I thought was: Wow, look at the interior of his room! He's living it! It's not so much about being jealous of his decorating style choices. It's more about missing something in my own room that makes it feel homely. My room's stuffed with moving boxes and painting material. There's not much space to move around. But I know that if I move around some stuff and do my best, I can achieve the level of homeliness that my friends room … [Read more...] about Salmon-Spinach Pasta Recipe
The Freedom to Do the Wrong Things: Free Will in Milton’s Paradise Lost
In the part of his Biblical Series on Adam and Eve, professor Jordan Peterson (1:56:11) questions: "The mystery is not why men abandon their children. It's the reason why men ever stick with them. That's the mystery." For a lot of teenage children growing up nowadays in broken families, there may be some answer to this question in reading John Milton's Paradise Lost. To recover from the divorce of his or her parents, the soon to be adult will have to assume some responsibility for his- or … [Read more...] about The Freedom to Do the Wrong Things: Free Will in Milton’s Paradise Lost
Paper: A Capitalist Reading Of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
"I found employment, the third day after my arrival, in stowing a sloop with a load of oil. It was new, dirty, and hard work for me; but I went at it with a glad heart and a willing hand. I was now my own master. It was a happy moment, the rapture of which can be understood only by those who have been slaves. It was the first work, the reward of which was to be entirely my own. There was no Master Hugh standing ready, the moment I earned the money, to rob me of it. I worked that day with a … [Read more...] about Paper: A Capitalist Reading Of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
Observing Through Rose-Coloured Metaphor Glasses
Elizabeth Bishop's Vague Poem (Vaguely love poem) (Bishop, 2006) is characterized by the rose crystal. The speaker is introduced to the "rose rocks" in the first and second stanza, has it described to her and describes it herself in the third and fourth stanza and recalls the rose rocks and uses its characteristics when describing a naked body in the fourth stanza. In this response paper I will identify the rose crystal as a metaphor for the naked body. I will also argue that there seems to be a … [Read more...] about Observing Through Rose-Coloured Metaphor Glasses
The Bluest Eye and Its American Truths
Morrison incorporates older African-American media into her narrative, among which the Narrative of Frederick Douglass (Werrlein 53). By featuring mainly female characters in The Bluest Eye Morrison both stands on the shoulders of a giant and brings something different to the table. By referencing to Douglass Morrison is able to show the female perspective of  lives which are left behind due to the colour of their skin. In the protagonist of The Narrative of Frederick Douglass a sense of … [Read more...] about The Bluest Eye and Its American Truths
Critique on Kraus’ Remediations of Visual Art
Kraus' work I Love Dick remediates visual art. The question is what the endgame of Kraus' remediations is. In this paper I pose that Kraus remediates visual art in an attempt to have her emotions, intelligence, and merit as a female artist validated. One of the goals of writing is being read and transferring ideas. This ties in with Kraus' quote of Olsen, who states that the "best poetry is a kind of schizophrenia - It is a transfer of energy between the poet and the reader" (225). The tenor … [Read more...] about Critique on Kraus’ Remediations of Visual Art
Using Pynchon’s Bleeding Edge As a Normative Mirror
The first 275 pages of Pynchon’s Bleeding Edge are rather heteronormative. This in itself is not a problem – it’s welcome material in a world where the media is saturated with embracing alternative norms. This response paper will explore how the first 275 pages of Bleeding Edge are heteronormative, the question of desiring – as a woman – a man who has power and seems morally deviant, and how these norms are telling of 21st century sexual morality. There are ample examples of heteronormativity … [Read more...] about Using Pynchon’s Bleeding Edge As a Normative Mirror
Painting: Smoking Gets Me Nowhere
Been off tobacco for more than thirty hours now. The longer I don't smoke, the easier it becomes. I painted this to distract myself from urges to buy a pack. It's made with new 15mm POSCA markers - the paint is not as opaque as I'd like, but it will have to do; if you stand at a distance you don't see that they don't cover the underlying paint. I'll buy MOLOTOW again the next time, 13.50 for a marker is too much on second thought. MOLOTOW markers are cheaper, refillable and the paint is … [Read more...] about Painting: Smoking Gets Me Nowhere
